This wedding evoked very special memories for me, as my wedding reception was also held at the Calhoun Beach Club in 1986! At that time, the venue had lots of lattice, ivy and wicker . . . not any more! The beautiful architectural "bones" of enormous Palladian windows and thick woodwork now serve as the backdrop to two chic ballrooms: The Boulevard Room with its sweeping staircase, used for the ceremony; and the Solarium, with its terrace overlooking Lake Calhoun, for the reception.
We worked with Sadie's Couture Floral to bring to life the bride's vision of an elegant, classic wedding. Grace knew she wanted slate blue for her bridesmaids, and initially thought that all-white florals would be perfect. We met with Melissa at Sadie's several times and at the last meeting, the bride showed her a picture of some subtle blues mixed in with the white flowers. Eureka! Melissa pulled out some inspiration pictures, and we knew we'd hit upon the perfect September wedding vibe.
The bride wanted tall taper candles for the head table. Unfortunately, the venue only allowed flames enclosed safely in glass. We sourced tall glass cylinders and our team painstakingly affixed them to our crystal candlesticks to ensure they were safe to use at this historical building. Bonus: they added an extra sparkle!
In addition to the huge vases they provided for the massive tall arrangements, Sadie's also wove a beautiful floral garland onto a majestic wooden cross made by the groom's father. This garland was removed during cocktail hour and placed down the center of the head table. The two giant bouquets on either side of the cross joined their third sibling on the head table, as well. When the guests entered the Solarium and saw all of the white and blue arrangements towering over the tables, we heard more than one audible gasp!
For the tables which didn't hold a tall bouquet, we placed several of our "charisma" candleholders. These look like large goblets. From clear crystal, to mercury glass, to subtly bejeweled ones, they made an incredibly romantic scene on the tables. Once again, Sadie's knocked it out of the park by accenting the candleholders with fresh blooms!
One of our favorite elements were the acrylic guest seating charts made by A Milestone Paper. She even enlisted the help of her father-in-law to make stands like some we had seen online. By using this system, guests didn't need to carry around their escort cards--they were already placed on each of the guest tables in little acrylic holders! A Milestone Paper also created the invitations--check out those adorable die-cut Minnesota inserts! Their custom programs highlighting the couple's favorite things, along with the order of service, were also a big hit.
